About Christopher Gergen '93
Christopher Gergen is a visiting lecturer and
Director of the Entrepreneurial Leadership Initiative at Duke University within
the Terry Sanford School of Public Policy’s Hart Leadership Program.
Christopher is a founding partner of Life Entrepreneurs, LLC, a leadership
development and consulting firm, and co-author of Life Entrepreneurs: Ordinary
People Creating Extraordinary Lives (Warren Bennis Leadership Series;
Jossey-Bass), a book detailing the leadership development curriculum that
students experience through Christopher’s classes. Current classes taught by
Christopher include Leading as a Social Entrepreneur and Launching and Leading
a Social Venture. He is the “Innovator in Residence” at the Center for Creative
Leadership and also Founding Executive Director of a community-led effort
called Bull City Forward to establish Durham, NC as a national model of
economic development through social innovation and entrepreneurship - the
center-piece of which is a downtown social innovation campus enabling local
entrepreneurs to create world-changing solutions.
Additionally, Christopher is the co-founder and a
current board member of SMARTHINKING, the leading online tutoring provider in
the United States-serving over 200,000 students from more than 1,000
universities, colleges, and high schools. Other entrepreneurial ventures
include starting a coffeehouse/bar dedicated to promoting the arts and music in
Santiago, Chile and helping to launch the “Entrepreneur Corps”-a national
service initiative sponsored by AmeriCorps*VISTA that placed 400 full-time
business volunteers for a year of service in over 90 non-profit organizations
across the country. Previously, Christopher started LEAD!, a non-profit
leadership, entrepreneurship, and service program for Gonzaga College high
school students in Washington, D.C. and is a founding board member of the E.L.
Haynes Public Charter School also in D.C.
Christopher’s further professional experience
includes serving as Vice President of New Market Development for K12 Inc. and
Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Business Development and Strategy
for New American Schools. Christopher received a Bachelor of Arts with honors
from Duke University, a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the George
Washington University, and his M.B.A. from Georgetown University. He lives with
his wife and two children in Durham, NC.

About Bill Brown '80
Bill Brown is cofounder of Palmer Labs, LLC, and 8 Rivers Capital, LLC,
companies that focus on financing and commercializing technologies related to
energy, internet, biomedical devices, and the telecom and automotive
industries. A distinguished lawyer with an extensive career in financial services,
Brown has held leadership positions at Goldman Sachs & Co., AIG
International, and Morgan Stanley. At Duke Law, his teaching focuses on
entrepreneurship, business law, business planning, capital markets and
corporate finance. He was instrumental in helping put together Duke’s LLM
program in Entrepreneurship and the Law.
Brown has authored a number of pieces and is a frequent commentator for a
number of organizations, including the BBC, NPR, Bloomberg, The New York Times,
NBCTV-17, Forbes.com, MarketWatch, China.com and The Huffington Post.
A 1980 graduate of Duke Law School, Brown was a member of the editorial board
of the Duke Law Journal. Brown practiced law in New York City from 1980 to
1989, first at Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine and then at Sidley &
Austin, where he was a partner. His practice involved acquisition financing and
workouts, project finance, leveraged leasing, Latin America debt refinance, and
securities regulation.
Brown began his financial services career in 1990 when he joined the currency
and commodity sales group at Goldman Sachs & Co., At Goldman Sachs, he
helped grow the foreign exchange business in the asset management community,
first in New York and then in London. In 1996, Brown was recruited to AIG
International to become global head of sales for currency and fixed income and,
one year later, was recruited to Morgan Stanley to become U.S. head of foreign
exchange sales. During a part of this period, Brown also ran emerging market
and non-dollar debt sales. He then took over listed derivatives as global
co-head, managing over 500 members of sales, marketing, information technology,
and operations teams in nine locations globally.
Brown is a former member of the Duke University School of Law Board of Visitors
and previously served for several years on the School of American Ballet
Corporate Advisory Board. He is an arbitrator with the American Arbitration
Association. In addition to his Duke Law degree, Brown holds bachelor's degrees
in both biology and political science from MIT in 1977. He is married and has
two daughters, one a magazine editor in New York City and the other a Duke
undergraduate.

About Mitch Mumma '81
Mitch is primarily responsible for Intersouth's technology portfolio. He joined

subsequently went public.
Mitch is known for board and syndicate leadership as well as tireless focus on
portfolio company success. He has provided early financing and venture
leadership for numerous successful companies and served as CEO of an Intersouth
portfolio company.
Prior to joining Intersouth, Mitch worked in finance and operations for a high
growth computer hardware and software company. Previously, he worked as a
manager in the high growth business practice at Touche Ross & Co. (now
Deloitte & Touche).
Mitch is a Director and former Chairman of the Board of the Council for
Entrepreneurial Development (CED). He currently serves on the Board of
Directors of the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA). He is a member
of the Advisory Board of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at
Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and also serves on the Advisory Board for N.C.
State University’s Engineering Entrepreneurs Program. In addition, he has
served as a mentor to the Kauffman Foundation’s Kauffman Venture Fellows
Program.
Mitch is a frequent speaker on the topic of venture capital and an adjunct
professor at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC where he teaches a course
on venture capital. He received an A.B. in management science from Duke

============================== About the Duke Entrepreneurship Education Series The Duke Entrepreneurship Education Series (DEES) is a comprehensive program designed to introduce all Duke students – from graduate, professional and undergraduate schools – to the key concepts necessary for a future in entrepreneurship or venture capital.
The series intends to connect students from all parts of the Duke community, including liberal arts, business, law, engineering, public policy, medical and science fields, with the goal of increasing the likelihood that exciting developments in the lab will find the key collaborators needed to translate innovations into full-fledged companies.
The sessions alternate between Fuqua and Teer. The events run as follows: 1) Each session will begin with a social hour at 6pm, including food and drink. 2) The speaker will go on at 7pm, and will talk for 40-60 minutes, followed by a Q&A. 3) Finally, after the speaker there will be an additional opportunity for networking with classmates and speakers.
